Variable Data Printing

Variable data printing (VDP) is a printing technique that enables the creation of unique and personalised print items for individual customers by incorporating variable elements such as images, messages or graphics. VDP is also known as variable information printing (VIP) or variable imaging (VI). The potential for personalisation and customisation through VDP is limitless.

How Does Variable Data Printing Work?

Variable data printing services start with a standard artwork template combined with a dataset of unique information, which may include text, images, or other design elements to appear on each individual item. Digital printing software processes both the static design and the variable content in a single pass, removing the need to manually create multiple artwork versions.

With variable data printing, each piece can be personalised with different information efficiently, without the need to produce every version separately.

What Do I Need to Set Up a VDP Print Run?

Designing variable data printing is a straightforward process. You will need a static artwork file for the elements that remain consistent across every printed piece, along with a spreadsheet in CSV format containing the unique data to be applied. This approach allows multiple personalised versions to be produced efficiently, each featuring its own individual information without the need for separate artwork files.

What If I Want to Print Unique Images on Each Item?

Personalising printed cards with variable images is a straightforward process. Each image file name should be referenced within your database, and a folder containing all associated image files should be supplied alongside the static artwork file and database file. This setup allows variable data printing to produce individual cards featuring unique images, without the need to create separate artwork for each version.

How Can I Specify How VDP Elements Are Arranged on My Print Design?

You can either leave a note with your order at the checkout, or if you’re using InDesign Photoshop or Illustrator, you can add placeholder text or graphics on a separate layer to the rest of your design.

Either way, we’ll send you a digital proof of your design which will indicate where the VDP elements are placed and how they’ll look on your final printed design. If you need to adjust the design before going to print, simply let us know!
